Ep. 61 – It’s Time To Stop Letting Fear Run Your Business

Fear is a crazy thing, it’s also insidious

It can sneak into our lives and take over, especially if we’re not careful. As entrepreneurs, we don’t want fear to make our decisions for us. Today we’re talking about fighting fear and taking action in our businesses.

Fear Tries To Take Over More Than I’d Like to Admit

Sometimes I’m confident and moving forward. Other times, I feel stuck and afraid. This is a common story, especially here in 2024, which has been a weird year for many.

The year 2024 has been especially odd with unpredictable changes in business cycles.

Truth is many of us are struggling. Fear might creep in and start guiding our choices. When that happens to me, it’s time to remind myself to stop letting fear run the show. I know what to do and have what I need. I just have to do it.

Recognizing Fear

Fear shows up in different ways. For me, it often shows up as anxiety. I might feel anxious about a decision or a client meeting. This can stop me from taking action.

Fear can also look like researching forever instead of acting, or comparing ourselves to others. Comparison steals our joy and can paralyze us. It makes us think we’re not doing well enough because we’re not like someone else.

Sometimes, fear makes us change our plans constantly. We see others doing something different and think we should do the same without really planning.

A Mouse Story

Recently, I’ve been dealing with mice in my house. It made me face my fear head-on. I’d been seeing evidence and at one point thought I had blocked their access and that my deterrents were working.

But then I started seeing their presence again. And then the final straw was the day my dog alerted me to a mouse in the house. OH NO! I realized I couldn’t ignore it anymore. I had to take action.

I had experience dealing with mice before, so I knew what to do. I blocked holes, set deterrents, and cleaned up, again. It wasn’t fun, but each step made the next easier. Taking action helped me build confidence.

Lessons Learned

  • Doing Hard Things: It’s not always fun, but taking action helps.
  • Taking Steps: Each step makes the next one easier. Facing our fears builds confidence.
  • Support: Talk to friends, family, or even search online for solutions. Getting advice and support can help a lot.
  • Make a Plan: Decide your steps and take them. Don’t let fear stop you.
  • TAKE ACTION and tell fear you’re done having it in control.

Dealing with fear means we need to take action. Reflect on these questions:

  • What decision are you avoiding in your business?
  • Why are you afraid? Is it fear of making a mistake or a wrong decision?
  • What’s one small step you can take to make the decision easier?

Taking action, even if we’re scared, helps us move forward. Talk to a friend, share your fear, and get support.
