Ep. 38 – Do You Need to Know the Why Behind Your Business?

Do you ever find yourself asking and wondering, “Do I need to know the ‘why’ behind my business in order to have a successful business?”

If so, you’re not alone.

Do you need to know? I’m gonna give you my super definitive absolute answer, possibly. Maybe.

And the reason I’m saying that is that I think there’s 2 stages of business. There is the scrappy-get-started-because-I have-to-stage a business.

The Selah Entrepreneur Podcast - Episode 38 - Do you need to know the why behind your business?

The “Scrappy Get Started,” Stage

Here, we often know why we are starting the business.

  • Lost a job
  • Following a dream
  • Need to quit a job and don’t want to jump into another one
  • Want to contribute to family finances
  • Need the freedom of working from home

So these are a few of the reasons we started our businesses.

Then there’s…

The “I’m Changing and Ready For More,” Stage

Here we’ve moved on from getting scrappy and need to stage into something more. You are ready to dream bigger, do more, and step into a calling that is greater than you imagined.

Now you are ready to:

  • Understand your strengths and skills and how they can make a greater impact
  • The reason ‘why’ you do what you do
  • Who you are called to serve, and how
  • You are ready to step into the calling on your heart

This kind of why is a much deeper journey and can take you to unexpected places.

You are now at a point where things are changing.
You’ve changed.
You’ve grown.
Your skill set has grown.
Your interest may have changed.
Your interest may have evolved, and it’s time your business changed too.

Now you’re ready to understand the deeper why. Your why takes on a whole other level of meaning.

How do you get to know your deeper why?

  1. Get okay with your business timeline. You are exactly where you are supposed to be.
  2. Take action on what you know, learn more.
  3. Seek advice and wise counsel.
  4. Ask questions and keep asking until you find the answers that you are looking for

So do you need to know the why behind your business? It depends on what stage you’re in your business.

When you’re first starting out and you need to be scrappy, and you’re just doing what you need to do to get it started, I don’t think the why is nearly as important. When your business is ready to grow, when you and your business are ready to evolve, when you’re ready to step up further into your calling, then I think the why becomes very important. And now the why means more.

The business clarity journey is one that gets revealed layer by layer. And I think your ‘why’ is the same. You uncover it, and discover it as you journey through your business, as you take action, as you do things that you never thought you could do before.

Do you know the ‘why’ behind why you started your business? Do you know the ‘why’ behind the work you do today?
