Ep 108 – Why Asking “Why” Is the Most Powerful Thing You Can Do for Your Business Right Now

If you have been running on autopilot, feeling disconnected, or wondering if the business you built still fits who you are today, this one is for you. I am getting personal about my own season of deep questioning, and why not having all the answers right now is not only okay… it might be exactly where you need to be.

When was the last time you asked “Why” about your business?

There is a question so simple it almost feels too small to take seriously.

Three letters. One word. And yet it has the power to cut right through the noise, the habits, the routines you have been running on for years, and ask: is this still right for me?

That question is why.

  • Why are you in business?
  • Why are you showing up the way you are?
  • Why are you offering what you are offering?
  • Why are you marketing in the places you are marketing?
Why asking "why" is the most powerful thing you can do for your business right now - Doing Business Gently - Episode 108

These are not questions to ask once, file away, and never return to. They are questions worth coming back to again and again, especially when life changes around you, because it always does.

When Life Changes Your Why

I will be honest with you. I have been asking “why” in my own business throughout 2026, and especially in recent weeks, after a significant loss in my family. The why that originally launched my business. And rather than pretending to have it all figured out, I am going to tell you the truth, I do not know my why right now.

And I am okay with that.

If you have ever had that feeling, the one where you are still showing up, still doing the work, still serving your clients, but something underneath has shifted and you are not sure what it means yet… you are in the right place.

What Happens When You Stop Asking Why

When you stop asking why, you do not necessarily fall apart. You just drift.

You start doing things out of habit rather than intention. You blend in because you are just going through the motions. You feel what seems like burnout, but what is often something closer to misalignment, a gap between who you have become and the business you are still running as if nothing has changed.

Asking why is not a crisis intervention. It is a healthy habit. It is a way of checking in with yourself and your business regularly to make sure you are still moving with intention, not just momentum.

The Four Areas to Ask Why

Here are the four areas I walk through in this episode, and the ones I come back to regularly in my own business.

Your Business

Start here. Why are you still in business? The reason you started may have been rooted in urgency, a job that was not working, a caregiving season that required flexibility, or a now-or-never moment. That is a valid beginning. But as you grow, your why needs to grow too. Take the time to ask whether the original why still fits, or whether it is time to find a new one.

Your Products and Services

Are you offering what you offer because it genuinely serves your clients and energizes you? Or because people keep asking for it, or because you are good at it even though you do not love it? Asking why about your offers helps you build a product suite that is purposeful, not just practical.

Your Marketing

Are you showing up in the places you show up because you have asked why, or because someone told you that you should? Consistency matters, but so does intention. Before you add another layer to your marketing, ask why. What is the purpose of this channel? What results is it actually producing? Sometimes the most powerful move is to double down on what is already working rather than adding something new.

You

You are the most important asset in your business. So when you ask how you are doing and you cannot answer the question why, that is worth paying attention to. Why are you pushing? Why are you hiding? Where are you not resting, and why? Protecting yourself is not a luxury. It is strategy.

You Do Not Have to Do This Alone

Recently in the Gentle Business Mastermind, we had one of those conversations. I challenged the women to ask why about the things they were doing and not doing. It was not a comfortable conversation. One of the members reached out to me afterward and said it was tough, that she did not like the answers she was coming up with at first. But she also said it was necessary, and she was grateful we had a safe place to have that kind of conversation.

You can ask why on your own. And if you sit with it long enough, you will get below the surface. But there is something about being in community, with people who are safe and who will gently push back, that helps you go deeper than you might on your own.
